What is foster care?

Every year in Texas, thousands of children are removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. A judge places them in the care of the Department of Family & Protective Services (DFPS), which then works with licensed agencies like ours to find safe, nurturing homes. Our goal is to provide stability while supporting the child’s healing and working toward the best permanent outcome, whether that’s reunification with their biological family, placement with relatives, or adoption.

What types of children do you serve?

We provide foster homes for boys and girls ages 0–17 across the Houston area and surrounding communities, with extended support available for youth up to age 21. Fostering looks different from raising your own children. Many of the children we serve have experienced trauma, loss, or instability. They often need extra patience, understanding, and consistent care. That’s why we provide strong training and support to help families handle a variety of needs and behaviors. While it takes dedication and teamwork, the opportunity to help a child feel safe and loved makes it incredibly rewarding. Learn more about our placement demographics on the Foster Care Program page.

How long does it take to become a foster parent?

The safety and well-being of every child comes first, so we move thoughtfully through the process. This includes interviews, home visits, background checks, and specialized training focused on trauma-informed care, normalcy, Medical Consent and others. Most families complete the process in 3 to 6 months, depending on how quickly they finish the required steps and paperwork. We’ll guide you through every part so you feel prepared and supported. Review our baseline criteria on the Become a Parent page.

What kind of support will I receive as a foster parent?

You won’t be on this journey alone. Once we identify a potential placement, we’ll share all the information we have so you can make an informed decision. After a child joins your home, you’ll have a dedicated case manager plus access to our team of therapists, social workers, and behavioral specialists. We offer 24/7 emergency support and ongoing training opportunities throughout the year. Many of our foster families also build friendships with one another and share respite care and encouragement. Explore our complete safety net resources on the Family Support page.

What about the costs of caring for a foster child?

We provide reimbursement to help cover the day-to-day costs of food, clothing, and other essentials. The amount is based on the child’s level of need and is paid once a month. In addition, nearly all children in foster care are covered by Medicaid, which handles their primary medical, dental, vision, and behavioral health needs.

Can I adopt a child from foster care?

Yes, many of our foster families do go on to adopt. Adopting a child you’ve already fostered often leads to stronger, more successful outcomes because a relationship and trust have already been built. If you decide you’d like to pursue adoption, we’ll support you through the entire process while you continue fostering other children if you choose.
